The required skills for project management vary as widely as the industries that utilize them. When you define the project, you can begin defining the project management skills needed to successfully tackle the job.

Now that you have determined if you have the core skills for project management, what do you know about the industry you will be managing the project for? Since a project manager is typically involved from inception all the way to completion, a broad knowledge of the industry, company and product you will be working with is imperative.
Successful project managers will also study the competition closely. These project management skills are learned through training, education and experience.
